Computer Parts Catalog

Objective

The main goal for this assignment was to create a two-page catalog. I needed to create this with at least ten different items that are all related. I chose to use some essential computer parts from the computer that I built myself a little while back! In the end the product was supposed to show off each individual part and design a spread that made sense with the content.

Photography

The first step I took was taking photo’s of all the individual parts, actually I had to take apart my computer first but that’s not the point. I went to a photography studio and shot the parts in a light tent on a white background to make it easy to mask out later.

Image Masking

After spending a couple hours in the studio getting the perfect photos of each part, the next step was to take those images into Photoshop! Because most of the computer parts have odd shapes to them, using the pen tool was the best option to select the part. Once the selection was complete I used a layer mask to remove the white background on the image.

Final Design

After another few hours of masking out the parts in Photoshop, it was time to creating the final design. The actual design of the catalog was created in Adobe Illustrator. I made the background of the two page spread and then placed the Photoshop files of each computer part into the design. After composing all the parts I added the text and descriptions and some extra graphic elements to give the catalog more life.

Run-DMC Brochure

Run-DMC Brochure

Objective

Create a tri-fold brochure on a specific topic, in this case, Run-DMC. This piece includes use of typography techniques and basic digital publishing knowledge.

Run-DMC was started in the 1980’s in Queens, NY by Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and later joined by their DJ, Jam Master Jay. The group released 7 studio albums, toured with Aerosmith, and paved the way for the DJ/Rapper relationship in Hip Hop. Unfortunately, in 2002 Jam Master Jay was shot and killed which lead to the retirement of Run-DMC.

Iconography

Run-DMC was known for having iconic styles with their bucket hats, DMC’s glasses, and their partnership with Addidas. I wanted to capture their style with my illustrations and overall feel of the brochure.

Color Palette

The Run-DMC logo is another very iconic logo in music. The red and black colors with the bold typeface works very well together. I wanted to keep this color scheme when creating the brochure.
